Is it possible for new grads to begin working in the Emergency room immediately?

I suggest starting with pre-op and post-op rotations, followed by a rotation in the ICU. This sequence will provide you with a smoother transition into a challenging training environment and allow you to develop your pediatric nursing skills effectively before entering a high-stress unit like the ICU.
Another option is to begin with pre-op/post-op rotations and then move to rotations in the emergency room or ambulatory care. A rotation on the telemetry floor may offer some of the necessary skills to prepare you for the demands of the ICU or ER.
