Kids are so resilient and it’s easier to deal with them crying and whining than dealing with an adult with the same behavior.
I have been a pediatric nurse for over 20 years, and now I lead a pediatric course at a University and teach clinical. The best thing about being a pediatric nurse is the strength I have witnessed in our pediatric patients. They are resilient and smile no matter what! I feel attached to the pediatric patient, and they can sense my compassion towards them. Students have told me they went into pediatric nursing after watching me care for pediatric patients. Many students are afraid of kids, but I work them through their fears to see the joy in caring for our little ones.
As I was going through nursing school, I was almost finished and was concerned because I still wasn't sure which area I wanted to go into. Our second to the last rotation was pediatric nursing and during that time, I just knew that is what I wanted. I worked for a Trauma Level 1 Hospital for about 7 years on the infant/toddler acute care unit. The infants and toddlers were so sick and they really needed nurses at that time. It was very rewarding! I even saw two of our toddlers many years later, who were now all grown up and were cancer survivors. I was on their nursing team and the primary nurse for one. How amazing that was!
