Why can't nurses treat family members or friends as patients?

February 22nd, 2024

In a formal setting such as a hospital, you will encounter more serious issues with family and friends as patients. This goes far beyond someone calling you up and saying "I have this bad cold... what should I do?" or "Can I come over and show you this rash...?" In situations that are more complicated and have the potential for less positive outcomes (such as you will find in said formal setting), you need some distance. With family and friends you may miss the subtle symptoms that presage a real problem because of a subconscious desire not to see it. Emotional involvement with someone sharing a close relationship may not allow you to see symptoms or act as you must professionally.

After 31 years of bedside patient care, much of it in NICU and PICU, I can state that the family members and care givers which might be friends are not only a member of the team, but are also your patients. You are teaching them how to care for their loved one regardless of age, just as you would teach the patient. Care and caring does not stop at the bed, but includes the patient , the family, and the circle of support.
