what jobs would you recommend for an LPN who is just getting out of nursing school besides long term care? My ultimate goal is to work mother and baby, labor and delivery, NICU, etc.

The best way to start any nursing career is to take a position in a regular Med/Surg unit. It takes about 2 years to accrue real nursing experience.
Along the way take classes in L&D and Peds.
You will never regret the education you receive on a regular medical floor.

I feel like it really depends on your state. I've worked in Arizona, Georgia, Tennessee, and Oregon. 1 unit I worked on the LPNs did discharge teaching for postpartum moms and babies. But usually I work with CNAs or Scrub Techs. Could a LPN branch out and become a scrub in your state for the L&D's OR? If not, definitely look into OBGYN, midwifery, or peds clinics!

OBgyn office? Get as much experience as you can.

Depending on what state you are in will effect this the most. Many hospitals have moved away from using LPN's. I would look into a Pediatrician Office, or Pediatric Urgent Care, and see if the hire LPNs.
