How do I get ED experience for an ED position at my current hospital?
Check the hospital website and look for openings.
Apply first then speak with the director and let them know you are interested in working in the ED. Of course, they will take into consideration your educational background (how recently you completed school) and your current work experience.
Then they’ll check to see if they have someone to train you once you get onboarded.
These steps should help you at least get started.
To show you are dedicated and passionate, take a skills course, and ED class of some sort, and have at least your ACLS, bls, pals, and nihss stroke scale certification.
These are our minimum requirements in the emergency room.
All the best!
Find a hospital that offers an ED residency program. Get PALS, ACLS, TNCC certifications as well as NIH stroke scale if you can. You’ll learn a lot plus the hospital will know you are serious
Most hospitals give you the opportunity to transfer to different departments after 6 months, if your in good standing. Discuss with your manager. If they have openings you can apply.
Volunteer or take a PCA position first; if you are not sure it is what you want to do, then apply. If you want in, they probably have openings, and people generally start on the night shift, but I have seen day shifts available.
