How can I get better at setting up the operating room quickly and efficiently?

August 31st, 2023

I have been an OR nurse for more than 20 years and what works for me is to follow the same routine. I start by cleaning flat surfaces then I work on the bed to make sure I have the correct bed for the procedure then I lock the bed (always very important, safety first). Then I make sure the basic equipment and supplies are in the room like suction, bovie, bair hugger, and SCDs etc. after that I get the specialty equipment and supplies depending on Dr’s preferences. I usually get all equipment and supplies for the whole day so I don’t have to be running between cases (faster turnovers). Before opening the supplies and instruments I make sure I have a patient and that labs and everything else is good. Go back to the room and communicate with the surgical team any relevant patient information like allergies etc. while CST’s are setting up I go get meds then come back to count before I bring patient in the room.

I worked OR for 20 years. I suggest you develop a routine start at one end and work your way around the room. You will learn to spot what you need and you will develop a rhythm.
Believe in yourself and your skills speed will come.
