How does one gain entry into a brand new specialty such as Research, NICU, or some sort of Navigator? I have been a nurse since 2006 and I've worked in Med/Surg, Case Management, and Hospice. Thank you in advance!

Great question. It used to be experienced nurses only in specialty areas but more often than not I’ve seen new grads hired in these areas. Some have to sign some sort of contract so they don’t get trained then move on. I would suggest getting one of your managers to write a letter of recommendation. The old saying still holds true; it’s not what you know but who you know.

If you are currently working in a hospital, you can inquire if there are any courses being given by the education department to prepare you to begin working with infants in the NICU. Also, some universities and colleges offer CEUs that may introduce you to working with a pediatric population. Check with the manager of the NICU to ask what specialty education is needed for you to become a member of the staff? They should be able to make suggestions.

Taking courses towards a Master Degree in Nursing will give you the opportunity to learn how to do Nursing Research while specializing in a specific area of Nursing. Do some reading about specialty areas before deciding where you want to concentrate your studies. Most Master Degree programs have core courses and then specialty courses. Don't specialize until you really know what you want to do.

Some hospitals are doing research at their facility and you may be able to join the team.

Start taking CEUs in the area you want to apply for. Ask is you can shadow nurses in these specialties. It may help you hone in on what you want and shows your dedication to the position.
