I’ve worked in an inpatient rehab brain trauma unit for 5 years as a nurse. I’m planning on applying to NP program and wonder if I should transfer to a different unit in order to gain other skills and experience. Any suggestions?

I think emergency medicine for a year or two before starting the NP program will help with school, getting a job and being a well prepared NP

Check the requirement for the NP program first. Otherwise, you are trying to learn and new unit and study. From an old nurse.

I think it depends what area you want to practice in as a nurse practitioner. Acute or primary care? OB? Nurse anesthetist? I think once you decide on that, you can better determine what skills you might be lacking. Keep in mind, you will get experience during your NP clinicals as well, although I would recommend a post-graduate residency once you finish if that is possible. Good luck and feel free to write back if you have any other questions! :)
