"What are the common medications used in radiology nursing, and what do I need to know about their administration and side effects?"
Versed 1mg and Fentanyl 25-50 mcg used frequently for sedation and pain management. If using contrast during procedure, just watch for reactions, rashes, hives, etc. Monitor vital signs, make sure your patient is consented properly, sedation assessment paperwork needs to be done by physician prior to start. Check lab work, have a recent history and physical on the chart. Be aware of blood thinners patient is on including heparin, Coumadin, Eliquis , Plavix, Brilenta, Xerelto, etc. Keep resuscitation equipment updated, stocked, and close by including reversal agents narcan, romazicon, etc. oxygen, airway , and suction equipment ready.
Sedation causes decrease in respirations, oxygen sat to drop, blood pressure drops, and patients will fall asleep most often. Patient may become confused and need reorientation. Involuntary movement and confusion may cause patient to move around on the procedure table. Think safety and possibly restraints in some cases.
