I just accepted a job as a radiology nurse. What types of things should I know about the specialty and patient care?

Depends on your facility. Clarify what your role is and which areas it includes. For example ultrasound, MRI, CT, nuclear medicine, and the lab. Are you doing just sedation? Scrubbing cases etc. Know that you can not take an X-ray unless you get a limited license. Is it adult and pediatric? Do you need ACLS or PALS?

You can expect participating in care for patients getting biopsies, drains like abscess, g tubes, J tubes, nephrostomy tubes, ureteral stents, chole tubes, biliary tubes, biliary stents. Lines like PICC’s, temporary dialysis, permacaths, central lines, mediports. And so much more.

A good reference is the American association of imaging nursing. Or ARIN, become a member. This area has a certification. Our annual convention is June.

If you wanna talk I am available.

Please read the job posting and note what you are required to do. A general description of job duties should be in the posting. Ask the manager to give you a copy of the annual competency, annual performance evaluation, and probationary or radiology new nurse orientation packet for a detailed list of tasks.
