Can you be a travel nurse with an ADN?

April 16th, 2023

Yes, you certainly can. If you want to work the floor doing Med-Surg or any specialties (NICU, OR, L&D, etc) you can pretty much have your pick of what's available. The hardest part is finding a stable, reliable company that appreciates their travelers and reimburses well for expenses. And if you ever decide to get your BSN there are tons of travel jobs for nurse managers, especially in Long Term Care and Assisted Living. You might even get lucky and find a position in your area that has open positions for travel nurses....there are a lot of hospitals nowadays that can't find/keep 'permanent' staff and have come to rely on travel nurses to keep things going. As a traveler you can expect to make about double (or more) what you can make as a 'permanent' staff RN. And if you want to travel but don't want to work the floor providing direct patient care you can get any number of certifications online that will allow you to do administrative support-type work like MDS, Utilization Review, Pre-procedure Review, and Clinical Documentation Improvement. There are so many openings for travel nurses that some agencies are even accepting new grads!! Good luck !!

Yes, I was and did it for 10 years and loved it! Do your research on the travel agencies to see which one will benefit you the most. Get everything in writing before you start an assignment. If the agency is not willing to put what you need/want in a written contract, then that is not the agency that you want to work for.
