Did anyone who transferred from inpatient to outpatient regret it? The job is 5 days a week, normal business hours, no holidays or weekends. I just had a baby in March

I worked outpatient cardiology for 25 years. Never regretted it. Out patient is not a “piece of cake” as many hospital nurses may think coming in to it. It’s just a different animal. It is fast paced, you work autonomously a lot, but you get to form relationships with your patients if that something you’d like. I did. Pay not as good, but getting better all the time due to demand. Specialists are really the only ones who hire RN’s, but I did work care management for a large group of primary providers for a while and liked that as well. Can’t beat outpatient for blending personal with your professional life. Good luck in your search

I worked 6 years inpatient and transferred to same day surgery where I worked 20 years more. Never looked back. Finished my career 10 years later in a pain management clinic. Never regretted the move one moment.

I have worked outpatient for the last 31 years and I LOVE it. The thought of never having to work nites, weekends, or holidays is the icing on the cake. It makes for the best working hours for having a family. It made it possible to attend my childrens events, be home when they went to bed. You will be spoiled. There are very few openings because no one leaves this position.

I switched from ED to Ambulatory leadership. I don’t regret my move, but I am going back to the ICU. I am pregnant and affordable childcare for working moms is non-existent in my area (20K/year minimum where I am at). Going back to 3-12s, I can make my schedule around my husband’s schedule and we will only need childcare 1-2 days per month.

I transitioned to outpatient about a year ago and I am still on the fence. Working 5 days a week is a pain, but being home for dinner each night is nice. I would consider childcare, both financial and emotional costs. Working part time as a weekender was amazing for me and my family while my kids were young. I felt like a stay at home mom and the differential made it money about the same. My husband worked from home weekends, and childcare was just about nothing! Bedside is hard, but with the right employer, work life balance can’t be beat. And in a clinic, I spend SOOO much time on the computer or phone, direct patient care is almost non-existent.
Each person/situation is different, but it’s good knowing our skills are so valuable you can always go back to bedside! Best of luck to you!
