How complicated is it to get a license in a compact state

September 10th, 2022

Just lost my answer. Ugh. Retyping it. The NLC allows nurses to hold 1 compact license but you may have endless foreign and US single state licenses concurrently. There is no limit on them. Currently there are 39 states where you can apply for a compact license. You do not have to be in your home state to apply, but the cost increases out of home base, so to speak . If you apply out of home base, you just check the box that states you want a compact license. They will tell you the fee and run your background. If you have a former or current hit on your license, they will carefully examine and ask for proof, etc. I have traveled over 25 years, working ICU (all of them), IMCU (step down), ED, L&D, MS, Ortho, LTC (geriatrics), and dialysis. I literally started traveling when you could file a 1090 and claim the underwear you bought as a necessity for work and did my own taxes. Those were the days when your IRS return was 36,000 dollars+ (if you did it right) no matter if you made $125,00 that year and claimed exempt. Go to the NLC website www.ncsbn.org. Most of your questions will be answered there as state BON are now mostly remote and rarely email you back in a timely fashion. I hope this helps. D, RN.

go on your states' licensing website/DHS website and you should be able to see how your state/what states are participating in this

You first have to get a single state license for that state, then when you apply for the compact, you have to prove that you are a resident of said state. Good luck!
