What are your opinions on starting off in the OR as an RN right out of nursing school?

Unless you have any skills at bedside nursing and working with patients, such as nurse's aide, you would be pretty dangerous. You need proper OR trsining 6-9 months, and some skills with patients, like assessment, communication, emergency response, safety precautions, and recognizing signs and symptoms.

If the facility/system has a solid and lengthy preceptor program geared toward new grads, then this could work.

Nurses have done just that. If that’s where you think your skill set is best - do it!

You won’t get a lot of hands on with skills like starting IV’s, NG tubes, IV drips, etc, but it’s a great career. You will never have to worry about job availability and you can still advance to higher levels in nursing via this pathway.

Be forewarned, there are two specialties that seem to eat their young. OR. & ER. So you will need the passion to stay focused despite some the antics you will encounter.

Apply for a OR residency program first, learn AORN standards by heart and that should be the start.
