I retired from the Army Reserve. The day I was at Officer basic was the day Saddam invaded Kuwait. IT was exciting. We were all sent home as scheduled and there was no immediate impact.
At the time I joined I was 33 had about 12 years of ER/Trauma/ICU experience. I was able to grow myself and teach many others how to do their jobs. Our unit was the first Army Reserve Critical care Nursing course to do hands on at the National Naval Medical Center (now walter reed and NNMC are combined) Because we had more yeasts of experience than some of the active duty we were helping them learn.
Later I was in a teaching unit and discovered 10 years after I was retired that the troops we taught had the lowest morbidity and mortality in theater. His praise indeed
I was never deployed due to timing so cannot speak to that aspect.
Even being a reservist is not all fun and games but it is rewarding and you develop friendships that are enduring.
if you have school loans the service can assist in paying them off
If you join today there is an increased likelihood of active duty and deployments.
Would I do it again ... sure would.
