Is working for a unionized hospital better than a non-unionized hospital? I'm a new grad here and I am having a tough time transitioning into the RN role and terrified to be a nurse at bedside. Any advice is appreciative.
I think they both have their advantages but overall I found working in a non-union facility better. There was less of an "us vs. them" attitude and I enjoyed not having a 3rd party involved between me and my management team. I also found that the nurses in union facilities complained a lot more about things they didn't like instead of being proactive in suggesting, and making, changes. The non-union facility I worked at was eager to stay non-union so our pay, benefits and work environment was excellent. If you value and support your employees, treat them fairly and equally, there is no reason for a union to be involved.
I have worked in both settings and prefer union. I received higher pay, more regular pay increases, better benefits, pension and better routes for formally losing complaints than when I worked no union. Everything else is the same otherwise. People complain, some people are lazy, others aren’t. I only care about my money and my family and my retirements all of which were better protected under a union.
Non Union in my opinion. All new nurses are uncomfortable transitioning into a new role. As a new grad remember always ask questions, do not do anything you feel uncomfortable with. Make sure you have a good preceptor that guides you. After the end of your preceptorship if you feel you need more time ask for an extension on your preceptorship talk to the manager. Do not let anyone make you feel inferior if you need help. Do not have the attitude that you know everything, You don't nor do I after 28 years, Good luck
My first question t
o you would be
I have worked
Having worked both sides, first non-union hospital then a union facility, I felt more heard from admin of the non union hospital m In the union hospital it was tell your steward, who is your rep.... Just a waste to me. I'm a professional nurse and am fully capable of negotiating a contract with a job, I never felt the need to have a union give me rules and a pay scale and say that's it. Non union merit raises and bonuses could come any time of the year not just when there's negotiating going on every 3 yrs. However, the union does protect people, if unfairly targeted they would go sit with you while your being written up. They also keep people years and years past their expiration date if that makes sense.
