In my experience, unionized hospitals pay more than nonunionized.

My experience is that union hospitals pay more and raise the wages in the area in general.

I worked for a big hospital system, first in a non-union hospital then went to the union hospital in order to be treated better. The big wigs in charge don’t want their nurses to unionize and so they found ways to punish us such as delaying our raises and blaming the union. So all the non-union sister facilities got substantial raises before the union hospital saw an increase. They even hired physicians to speak to staff and deter them from voting for the unions.

No , from personal experience, non union hospitals pay more but benefits aren’t the best.

I worked for a hospital that had a Union. It paid really well, had great benefits too. The downside: it’s somewhat hard to fire someone in a union, therefore, sometimes you will find yourself working with people who know it’s difficult and they take advantage. If your manager is a good manager and they document and stay on top of things then that can be prevented. For the most part I find that even the best of them have to pick their battles because it’s so difficult. You see mediocre employees stay mediocre, bad employees constantly file complaints and their boss is now too scared to do anything for fear of reprisal charges so good people don’t stay long because they get tired of the substandard environment. So it’s not always a good thing!
