Every hospital and situation is different. Some hospitals have a float pool of RNs that go to the units that are short staffed. If that isn’t an option they will call nurses on their day off to come and work an overtime shift. If that isn’t an option then the remaining nursing staff absorb the addition work.

In a lot of cases, the nursing supervisor will request staff be pulled from another unit if that unit is adequately staffed. They may offer overtime to staff who has the day off. In lot of cases, The nurses on duty will work short of essential help.
