How do I handle patients with anxiety or claustrophobia during MRI or other enclosed imaging procedures?

We should start by providing "PROVIDERS" information that they need to help educate the patient on this procedure. And, not all MRI's are alike! Time, positioning, and "the-noise" will be different for each scan. I have had excellent primary care prepare me by asking 1) did I ever have a MRI before? 2) If YES then how did it go were you comfortable with the procedure? 3) If no experience, as medical personnel go visit your radiology department to get the real scoop. Building a line of communication. MRI technicians understand the importance of positioning, no movement as well the discomfort, fear factor and other concerns. Don't pretend to know without their input and maybe observing an MRI procedure! Get to know your techs in Radiology! Its always a comforting remark to say to the patient " I know that Teresa in the MRI unit will take good care of you. Tell her your concerns and she will explain them. However the "Teaching Moment " should have started with whoever ordered the procedure!
