What are some potential complications or adverse reactions that can occur during or after radiology procedures
With radiology procedures that use contrast, a client can have adverse reactions such as allergic reaction. If a patient has documented contrast allergy, RN should complete historical assessment with patient. This information should be relayed to ordering MD or radiologist for further recommendations. Some reactions are mild and can he prevented with medication before exam. For severe contrast allergy, the diagnostic may be completed without dye.
After interventional radiology procedures, RNs should assess any puncture or drain placement sites for bleeding. Vitals should be checked regularly to avoid delayed response to post procedure complications that may occur. Often times, medications are given during these procedures to minimize discomfort and may make patient drowsy. Monitor ETCO2 values and respiratory rates to decrease response times in chance of complications.
