I don't believe a new nurse should start in a speciality unit. Go work med/surg x1 yr. Get your experience in organization and prioritization. Learn what the labs mean to what is happening with the patient. Learn how to communicate with staff and doctors. Learn how to be in charge and deligate. Once you feel comfortable with your role as a nurse then you can move to a speciality. You ll be more confident and be able to focus on what you really need for that area of expertise. Just my thought but good advice!

If you're looking to start in any specialty, ICU and ER are great. You can go anywhere with experience like that under your belt. Look for hospitals offering nurse externship programs specific to those units. They will train you within a classroom setting and provide clinical preceptorships to learn on the job. Don't be afraid to just apply also, any specialty area will require training even if you are experienced, you'll have plenty of time to learn on the job. But nurse externship is a great way to start of you can find those programs in your area.

Anywhere you find an opening for something you’re at least remotely interested in, apply! Lots of med surg gatekeeping but…doesn’t matter! You will learn on the job, and you don’t have to suffer. I’m in Philly and I know a lot of ers here have new grad residencies, not sure about icu but def know people I went to school with who started there too!

Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn,It is a teaching training hospital for physicians and Nurses,For new graduates I would suggest start applying at the Emergency department there you will develop your skills and confidence, before you go to ICU or any department. One or two years is enough for a new nurse to become an astute nurse.
