Just about any hospital will train with the shortage as it is. I know every hospital in Southern California advertises for new grad programs. Actually, ICU and ED are a ruff start for new grads even the most experienced are leaving the fields. This is 100% honest answer. ED RN 30 years left the field I thought I would retire from. Sometimes I had upwards of 14 patients with no MA or EDT starting IV drawing blood hanging medications/fluids. I would have 4 ICU patients. My code room assignment with 3 other patients sometimes with drips. I took that home with me. I worried about the patients. All the while with online training demands and supply shortages.... still...saw death and fear and propaganda and divisiveness like never before. I asked for an exit interview.... Never happened. The masking mandates.... it is not at all how we were trained all of a sudden the mask can be worn ALL day.... seriously? It's about money. Find a place that still is patient centered care. I am not sure there is anything that is not corporate anymore. We wanted socialized medicine, here you go society it's coming. Being told what you can chart, what you can SAY (California) how you can practice. I'm not saying don't do it, I am saying have you eyes wide open. Ask these questions at your interview. We need great nurses with ethics and knowledge and strength. What I think is needed is for us to be real and stand in solidarity for the best care we can offer. Not by sacrificing ourselves but being united in the corporate expectations that are unrealistic or less than optimal for our profession. It has began that RN's and upwards can be criminally libel for following a Physicians order that ends up with bad results. Empower yourself with knowledge and confidence. Be the advocate not only for the patient but for nursing. Find a UNION affiliated spot which is not without flaws but it is better than non-union. We are the eyes and ears of healthcare. We deserve better and so do our patients.
