Do you tell friends & family that nursing is a good career to pursue? Why or why not?

Yes and no… Nursing is an excellent career choice if you can see past socio-economical, race, religion, and other beliefs and stereotypes and treat every human being that crosses your path as an equal, as important, and as deserving of your help!! Everyone of them!! It’s not a good career choice if you are doing it just for the money, because it is never appropriate compensation, trust me. There’s no amount of money to make delivering a stillborn, administering end of life care, or holding a crying child as their Parent is worked on unsuccessfully any easier. So if you have the empathy, the compassion, and the heart it’s perfect, if not try some other path. Please. Sickness, injury, trauma, accidents, illness is hard enough with a great nurse, a bad nurse just makes the hurt 10 times more.

Yes, being a Nurse is an excellent profession and you are able to make a nice living. Because it is a profession, you will be expected to act like a professional. Show up prepared, communicate clearly, provide compassion and gentle care to every person you encounter.

Yes I do but I tell them they really have to want to be a nurse and take the good with the bad because it is both stressful and rewarding at the same time. I wouldn't have changed my mind on being a nurse ever. I love it and have learned to deal with the ups and downs. And yes, I have had a few cries from being overwhelmed but after I get it out of my system I am able to pick up and go on.

Nursing its my love, its a love/hate relationship. Some days you will go home, glowing and feel like you are in the right place and you made a difference, can wait to do it all over again. Other days you will cry, sit in your car with a blank stare wondering if I can still become a stripper at the ripe age of 40, or if I have the strength to do it all over again tomorrow. Why are nurses so unappreciated. I plan my grand escape to a beautiful spot and somehow I show up to work the next day.
