What is the average nurse to patient ratio in the ICU?

It likely depends on the type of ICU you work in and where you are working.
My ICU has you with a single patient or with two patients at most.

ICU depends on acuity. 1:1 for your stand serious guarded or complicated patient. It is not unusual to have 1 :2
But they don’t tell you is you could have 1:3 or 4 esp if your boarding med-surg or telemetry patients. This freq catches nurses by surprise but it is derigor .

Massachusetts has a 2:1 max ratio. I worked in a Cardiac ICU and would often have one due to mechanical devices, CVVH or some other high acidity reason.
