What happens if you forget to renew your nursing license in a state you practice in?

You will be asked to leave the floor and return with a valid license. There is no room for error as the hospital will be liable if anything goes wrong that a nurse does not have thier license. And since you are not in compliance with the hospital you will be left on your own to defend your actions.
