Why is racism prevalent amongst nurses?

July 24th, 2022

Shonte answer is on point and to claim she’s bitter and angry furthers validates her response. The micro aggressions like bitter and angry are standard responses in every day life and definitely in nursing. The gate keeping is demonstrated in hiring practices, incivility in nursing by statements in response to blatant to covert actions and statements made by non black nurses… Bro, Chief, Boss, must speak English well to apply for positions, unit with 100 nurses and only 3 black folks… I can go on and on.. the exclusion of blacks from advancement when they are degreed up and well experience, disparity in care given when blacks in pain or discomfort are auto assumed to have an attitude or are angry, we are all assumed to be from the hood, we are excluded from commendations and recommendations … so don’t hate on Shonte.. there are plenty of Bobs and Karens who act out as patients and their is a clear severe degree of Racism, Micro aggressions, Incivility and Exclusion to Black RNs and Black patients demonstrated hourly by our non black colleagues /RNs continually. No I think you’re the angry and bitter ones and Shonte is keeping it Resl!

Susan, lol, I think its so funny you keep labeling me as bitter b/c I answered the question with truth. When you get done the truth is the truth, whether you have experienced it or you were the one being racist.

I’ve been a nurse for 42 years and have NEVER encountered racism in another nurse. And I have worked in just about every area of nursing and have friends, close friends, of all races. I have encountered nurses with just bad, unhappy, and negative attitudes. And these have usually turned out to be just unhappy being a nurse period. I love nursing!

Because of gatekeeping, by whites.

Susan Beale will just keep this feed going with her denial of the obvious. With said black nurses in leadership, please have a sit down and ask them about their paths to said leadership roles and I guarantee they will happily disclose the amount of racism, micro aggressions, incivility, exclusion, discrimination they have , are and will endure to maintain said position. You keep stating that Shonta and now myself, are either angry or need new jobs but her original message doesn’t convey anger or bitterness and nor does mine but we both convey the obvious you refuse to acknowledge in the reality of nursing. Your statements alone are the typical response most people in denial state when dealing with issues of race, discrimination and social injustices. You’re communicating defensiveness and ignorance to a simple statement that Shonta. As for being in Texas, I know all to well what Houston and Dallas offers and the experiences for myself , friends and colleagues of color endure in that Region , so please cry that story to those who are unaware and your experiences aren’t everyone’s experience and you have No Idea what it is like to be Blsck in Amerikkka! I’m putting this all to bed, you keep being in denial or try to be Woke to the realities of Amerikkka! Geez. God bless you!

Karen, my bad, Susan, I am a APRN/MSN BLACK PROVIDER, I’m happy with where I am in my career and life. I answered someone’s question and you attacked me with your microaggressions, but that what yall do best.

And Houston and Dallas are predominantly saturated black areas, and so you are going to see more black nurses male&female. Yes we hold leadership roles, MSNs, & PhDs too, and your point was what? B/c we are talking about racism and why its so prevelant, your responses ain’t help the question asked. Karens like yourself will never admit the truth, its ok we know the games yall play and we know how to finesse that BS too.

I work in the LA area of Cali. There are lots of DIVERSE nurses . I’ve worked with tons of different people (lots came from the Philippines). I never felt discriminated against. There was individual people who treated me like crap, just like so many others, but I wouldn’t say it was a race thing. I learned SOOOO much from the seasoned nurses who said they came over on the boat ( I think I sound racist saying that). They taught me everything and I got into critical care thanks to those nurses🙏🏽! I think/feel individual racism can occur but that’s just an angry person. Worked with a RN who never spoke to me for 12hrs, was mad, kicked the trash can, & growled at me. Was just 2 of us at times in the unit. Racism or just a horrible person??? I love Philippino food & culture. 1-3 bad ppl can be horrible & cruel. I just ignored it. It takes a bigger person. Eventually, she stopped. Racism or just a Sad person? I chose the later.

When people mention racism, there is the automatic thought that is is only from whites to non-whites. I have experienced the opposite. I am Latina, and I had a great staff made up of mostly white and asian at a former facility, however, when we had some non-white travel nurses come help, that's when I experienced racism. I recall 2 staff nurses asking me about one of my children who had been dealing with medical problems. Then a traveler, who was not part of the conversation, butted in to tell me that my kids are weak due to them being white. He started the sentence with "I'm not trying to be racist, but...." and then proceeded to state things that may or may not have been true, I don't know, I didn't look up his socalled research. When the other nurses tried to clarify his statements, the other travelers also not white, defended him and proceeded to tell us that our facility needed the help due to all the sick white people. We immediately had to end that conversation. When I stated repeatedly that I was hispanic, the travelers told me that it was just a different form of being white.

What happened in hospitals, is because it is allowed by leaders, but it isn't only racism, also bulling, mostly to new Nurses are bulling, instead or being welcome .

Lack of diversity in management positions, need more diversity on the floor or unit.
