As a new grad is it necessary to apply for a residency? Is it beneficial or would a traditional orientation be just as beneficial? Thank you!
Traditional orientation is fine, unless they give you two weeks and throw you out on your own. Our hospital gives new grads up to 3 months with another nurse if they feel they need that much time. Unusual but nice for a new grad. They should not put you on your own until you tell them you are ready.
I would take advantage of a residency if it is offered. You will get so much valuable experience that you don’t get in school.
You need the experience, a residency may be the way to go. Especially if you want to work in areas such as ER or ICU.
Residency programs are great! They are 1-2 year programs with a longer, more well rounded and set orientation, with much more long term mentoring and support, with built in educational classes / lectures. They are a great way to transition from the easy life of a nursing student to real world nursing. Some even rotate you through several different units for an expansive experience. Others place you where needed. But most tend to ask what area you're interested in and try to leave you there. Definitely go for a new grad residency if possible!!!
