Where to start to become a picc ml nurse? I am planning to take the class but will there be hospitals willing to train or do a supervised training? I’m in NY/NJ area. I have 3 yrs of bedside exp.
For PICC -line placement certification is a three day class in a classroom setting with hands on a dummy.
Then after you go back to your hospital setting then you have a supervised clinical access for three weeks. The vascular lead nurse can check you you off. Then the hospital can send your paper work to national certification data just like ACLS
The class, particularly an in-person class, will
help once you have a position. However, it is uncommon for a hospital to allow someone who is not an employee to come in and provide hands-on care for their patients, especially as a training experience. Many people have taken the class with the intention of getting experience and then working independently, but have failed to find a place to train. It is most effective to get a position on a vascular access team, and develop the skills under the tutelage and management of that team. You still need the class. There is a lot of knowledge that one acquires in this process, as well as the USG skill. It is a fun and challenging specialty. Good luck!
I have 3 yrs experience at pediatric hospital
Yes, around more than 1 years
Yes
I am not sure about the east coast, but in Cali u can get certified at a company and if u apply and get hired with them they will train u the hands on portion. Other hospitals like Kaiser will accept that cert and train within the hospital. It all depends on where u are applying and if they hospital is willing to train or they want previous experience.
Search for some PICC RN jobs in the area and call their departments to find out the what they are willing to offer.
Hello. I’ve been a PICC RN x 5 years. In Florida the class isn’t necessary and the only way to learn is to get the PICC nurse at a hospital to teach you. I wouldn’t waste time on the class. Additionally they might teach things, in the class, that are not the gold standard and you def do not want to pick up bad habits.
