Start wherever you feel passionate about. Many people will say you “have to” get a year or two in med/surg but you don’t necessarily have to. While you’ll gain a lot of knowledge and skills on various diseases, injuries, procedures, etc., if there’s a specialty you’re passionate about, I think it’s better to pursue that. Better to do what’s best for you than risk burnout on a unit you don’t even want to be on.
I would recommend starting at a hospital with a good nurse residency program. They are typically Magnet status.
As for specialty, follow your hearts desire! If you find that does not suit you then there’s always another specialty. I started in the ER and quickly found that wasn’t for me. I’m now in oncology and love it!
Last piece of advice…you do not have to accept poor behave from a preceptor. They are there to teach and guide you.
Nursing is amazing and there are so many different paths to choose. Good luck on your journey!
Yes, the hospital on a Med-Surg Unit would be a good start to just learn valuable nursing skills. At least for a year.
