Should I go PRN pr staff? I’ve been out of the ICU for 1 year but want to return. I would like to maximize on making the most $ so would you recommend doing PRN or staff? I know prn usually pays more but does my 1 year ICU hiatus matter?

PRN pays more hourly, but it usually comes with no benefits, depending on your employer. I’ve been per diem for 5 years and I love the pay, the FLEXIBILITY—oh my gosh, the flexibility! If I want to be off, I just don’t put myself available. I don’t have to request my time off and I love that. Being per diem also allowed me to attend grad school and work at my own pace. I get dental and health insurance through my husband. My employer does offer sick time and 401k (very bad match though, maybe 1%? But hey, better than nothing). The only problem that’s arising recently is that shifts have become less available because the hospital hired a loooot of travel nurses, so I’m not able to get as many shifts as I want and need but that might not be a problem at your hospital. Plus, I feel like these things happen in cycles; sometimes they call me every day for every shift and then sometimes I can’t get more than two shifts a week. I’m job hunting for NP jobs now and I’m finding a one year hiatus is not really a big deal! Good luck!
