I am stuck in a specialty (postpartum) and want a career path change to case management. Should I try to get a job in Med surg to gain more experience or get a certification in case management? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
depends what area of case management you plan on working in.
Case Management covers a multitude of job descriptions and industries (even within healthcare). But you do need experience in the area that you plan on working in.
You also need to research job availabilities so that you have some idea of where you want to work. However, any area of case management is stressful.
It also depends on what the case management consists of. Where I work, it’s mostly discharge planning. But I’ve seen job descriptions where it also includes floor/bedside work, so if that were the case you would likely benefit from led surg experience.
In my experience, it’s on the job training, so you don’t necessarily need med surg experience before starting. You’ll likely learn what you need to know as you go. :)
