If you want private system you have to find fellowship otherwise you can not get any OR position. They want at least one year experience. Also you can start as a medsurg RN and transfer. Or you can apply to HHCNYC system hospitals like Jacobi, Elmorst, Lincoln, Metropolitan and etc. they usually open for new grads.

I would also try surgery centers. You are in a major city so it will happen eventually. Maybe apply for a
Internship in the OR you will meet people that way and can express your interest. That’s a way to get your foot in the door.

You have to have a training program in this specility. It takes 6-9 months more trsining to be comfortable with the basics. Most of nurses' training is used differently in OR. Find a program for new grads. UC Davis and Cedars-Sinai appear to offer programs in Calif. Call hospitals and ask to talk with OR Directors. Contact local AORN for help.
