Did anyone struggle to find a job that hires new graduates when they finished school? Advice please

March 12th, 2024

I live in Las Vegas and started applying and interviewing 1 month prior to finishing school. I had 6 job offers from 3 different hospitals. Eventually settled on an ICU position at the hospital closest to me for $44 hourly. Are you willing to change your location? Different areas have varying levels of need.

Hi there. Try not to get discouraged. I know it's kinda crazy when places say you have to have experience but no one will hire you to get the experience. Kind of a double standard, huh? The best thing I can say is if you live near a teaching hospital, like a University hospital, many of them have nurse internships that you can do. Basically it means you get a preceptor for longer than a seasoned new hire. Try to find one of those. Lots of luck!!! You'll find the right one!! Also, while it's good to get the hospital experience right out of school, remember there are many many avenues you can take with nursing.

I was lucky to get a job almost 2 years after graduating with ADN, then achieving my BSN. Persistence. Do not give up! Plus I got my department of choice... emergency Department

Yes, I live in south Florida and me and my cohort struggled. We graduated December 2022. I didn't find a job until July 2023. A couple of my friends still have yet to find a job. They want to go straight to clinic tho. I did too and somehow got lucky. Out of many jobs I applied to, this one clinic reached out and was willing to train. So, it's not just you. The nursing job market is weird. I'm now trying to find a new job to get out of this one (toxic employees) and I've been forced to look out of state because I haven't gotten any call backs from anyone here in S. Fl.
My advice is
1. Be open to apply out of state if possible.
2. Keep applying. Don't get disheartened.
3. You might not get the choice of work you'll like, but get that one yr exp and then start looking for something else in a field you like.

Yes I definitely struggled finding a job, and eventually just started working at a SNF. After 4 months I got hired on through a graduate program on a Step down unit.

Yes! When I graduated with a master of nursing, I was unable to find an ICU position.
My suggestions:
1. Check out nurse residency programs as an option to gain experience.
2. The U.S. Public Health Service, Indian Health Service frequently has medical surgical floor openings in remote locations. Not to mention it’s quite an honor to provide culturally sensitive care to our Native American population. Many of these are located in Western States. It’s a fantastic opportunity for loan repayment in these remote locations. Ex. $20k/year with commitment. One downside is that if you are not satisfied at the hospital after signing on with the LRP (loan repayment program) & choose to leave, repayment of dispersed funds is required. Working for the federal government has many exceptional benefits. There’s numerous opportunities for cross- training which in itself is a great reason to choose this career path.
