As a new grad, do you have to start out with bedside nursing?

February 28th, 2024

You don’t but those jobs are pretty hard to find as a new grad. If you work a few years at the bedside you’ll have way more mobility not to mention much more skill, practice and time management. You might actually find that you like it or have benefits to expand your education and have the hospital pay for it! Good luck!

Tamika, you can do it! I was in a busy, ridiculous patient:nurse high risk L&D but working there for years as well as floating to IMC and mother/baby when they were short really sharpened my skills and confidence. Also eventually becoming Charge. After several years I moved on to work at a university wellness center as their nurse and coordinator. It was almost a little anticlimactic after the city job but I left with irreplacable experience from a unit with critical thinking and patient advocacy megaskills (I learned to take such pride in that!). I know it’s hard but you can do this! We need nurses to care for people. Best to you! And when you doubt… lean in to other nurses for support. This is a hard field.
