How to choose the right nursing program

Nursing is a popular career choice for high school students because of its flexibility, excitement, and tangible benefits to society. It is tempting to dive in as soon as possible when you dream of becoming a healthcare professional, but it’s important to consider factors such as school ratings and courses offered to choose the right program.

Location

The nursing school location is as crucial as its faculty, ratings and accreditations. Although some courses may be taught 100% online, it’s common that students must attend labs and clinical settings several days per week.

Tuition

Somes schools are more affordable than others. But you can always apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which enables you to get federal loans for college.

NCLEX pass rate

The NCLEX exam ensures that nurses are prepared to work as entry-level workers, so it’s recommended to look for schools that have at least a 90% pass rate. In addition, find out if the program covers a NCLEX prep course with all the disciplines needed for the test, such as management of care, safety and infection control and physiological adaptation.

Programs offered

Know the programs offered in the institution and, preferably, if they are accredited by ACEN, CCNE or regional accrediting agencies. When a program is accredited, it means that it has passed a rigorous evaluation.

Graduation rate

Having a graduation rate of at least 90% likely indicates high-quality support services or guidance, allowing students to complete their degree objectives in the shortest possible time and at the lowest cost.

Next steps

Location, fees, school ratings and programs offered are some of the main criteria necessary to make the best decision when starting your higher education.

The next step is to know what to do after you graduate, especially in relation to your first steps towards landing a job.

We’ve written an article about the temporary license and the certification processes in Utah. Read it to get off on the right foot as a recent graduate.

In addition, you’ll need to meet the state’s requirements for earning continuing education unit (CEU) credits. Access our free Utah CEU courses to continue your studies after graduation.

Don’t forget to ask for advice from experienced nurses who are already working in Utah.

How to choose the right nursing program

You choose a nursing school for its reputation and curriculum, but there are so many other things to consider. There’s the cost of tuition, commuting time between classes and your job, as well as the degree of flexibility the program’s schedule offers. Each factor will weigh differently on each prospective student based on their own priorities and needs.

Location

Nevada is an enormous state, with urban and rural areas, as well as tremendous diversity in its landscapes and culture. While three quarters of the population live in the area surrounding Las Vegas, there are plenty of reasons to choose a school in Reno, with its easy access to the outdoor activities of Lake Tahoe.

If you are currently working in one of the state’s many hospitals, you’ll want to choose a program that offers a convenient commute, or classes online and with clinicals offered nearby as well.

Tuition

Every student needs to consider the costs involved with attending a school. When investigating each program, be sure to investigate the availability of scholarships, and if you are already working as a nurse, look into whether your employer offers tuition reimbursement. Also be sure to fill out the FAFSA form as soon as you submit your applications in order to put yourself at the front of the line for federal student aid.

NCLEX pass rate

Nursing school administrators know that their own reputation rests in large part on the success of their graduates, so they work hard to ensure that students are well prepared before they sit for the NCLEX exam. The NCLEX pass rate is an excellent measure of whether a nursing school is academically rigorous. You also may want to check to see whether the schools to which you apply offer free NCLEX prep classes as part of their curriculum.

Programs offered

Not every nursing school offers the exact program that you are most interested in, or that you need. If you have already earned your ADN degree, make sure that the schools that you’re investigating offer RN-to-BSN programs. Likewise, if you are interested in pursuing an Advanced Placement Registered Nurse degree, make sure that the program to which you’re applying offers the Nurse Practitioner specialty that you’re most interested in.

Graduation rate

Schools often have reputations that exceed the actual success of their students. One good measure of a nursing program’s commitment to its students’ success is their six-year graduation rate. Schools whose students leave before completing their programs may be failing to engage.

Next steps

Choosing which of the many excellent Nevada nursing programs most interests you is just the first in a long series of steps on your educational journey. Once you’ve found the program that best suits your career goals and your financial needs and fits into your day-to-day schedule, you need to be diligent and organized about filling out applications, collecting and submitting personal references and transcripts, and making sure that everything has been received in time for each school’s deadlines. It’s work, but it’s exciting too!

After you’ve graduated, you’ll be qualified to move on to bigger and better things, and Incredible Health will be there to help you with your job search. We provide you with all the resources you need to stay up-to-date on Nevada state licensing, certification opportunities, and continuing education requirements, including the ability to reach out to a community of Nevada nurses who are eager to answer all of your questions and provide you with valuable information to help you along the way.

How to choose the right nursing program

You’ve chosen the career, now you need to find the program that will get you there. With a wealth of Oklahoma nursing schools to choose from, one of your considerations will likely be cost. Fortunately, there are options for low cost colleges in Oklahoma that offer nursing programs. It’s crucial to eliminate any school that doesn’t provide the program you need first, then evaluate whether you prefer a traditional setting versus online, the type of campus you’re looking for, costs, and reputation.

Each program has its own unique characteristics, so weigh elements like clinical practice sites, class size, and faculty-to-student ratio to make sure you’re in the program that suits you best.

Location

Even 100% online programs require you to attend some classes or events in person. Oklahoma is a vast state and its nursing schools are great distances apart, so decide whether you’re looking for a rural setting or one that’s more suburban or metropolitan. If you’re working at the same time that you’re attending school, you need to calculate commute time and costs too.

Tuition

There’s a significant difference in cost for the nursing schools listed above, and only you know what you can invest in your education. If you’re  a working nurse there’s a chance your employer offers tuition reimbursement, and many schools offer scholarships, grants, and financial aid. Be sure to fill out the FAFSA form to take advantage of federal funds for education, and reach out to each program’s financial aid office to explore other options available to you.

NCLEX pass rate

Every nursing program leading to a BSN prepares its graduates to provide compassionate, competent care, but for students to get their license they must pass the National Council Licensure Examination, or NCLEX. The percentage of a school’s graduates who pass the NCLEX is an important indication of the quality of their program and is a statistic that’s helpful for comparing your options.

Programs offered

Not every nursing school in Oklahoma offers every program. Your first step is to identify those that offer the specific degree pathway you’re looking for. Doing so will likely save you a great deal of time.

Graduation rate

Though  graduation rate is considered an important measure of a college’s performance, it’s important to remember that when calculating this statistic – the percentage of a school’s students that graduate after six years – the federal agency that provides this number doesn’t include part-time students or transfer students. As a result, this metric has increasingly been viewed as unnecessarily restrictive, leaving out the actual percentage of students who attain degrees.

Next steps

Whether nursing is a lifelong dream or a new career goal, you should be proud of yourself for deciding to move forward and earn your degree.

School selection is the next step, and entails filling out applications, gathering documentation and transcripts, asking mentors for letters of recommendation, and waiting to hear you’ve been accepted. It’s easy to get overwhelmed, but if you take your time, stay organized, and pay attention to detail, you’ll soon find yourself signing up for classes, participating in clinical practice, and graduating.

With your new degree in hand you’ll be ready to take on new challenges. If you’re planning on working as a nurse in Oklahoma you’ll need to know its license requirements, as well as the CEU requirements needed to keep that license up-to-date.  At Incredible Health, we have the answers to these and other important questions – and when we can’t answer we have a supportive community of Oklahoma nurses you can ask.

How to choose the right nursing program

Before zeroing in on a nursing program, you must consider several factors such as the school location, tuition, curriculum, and time commitment.

Location

Location, location, location! Location is a vital factor to consider, as some nursing schools charge different tuition fees for in-state and out-of-state students. If you don’t want to commute for hours every day, consider picking a school closer to you.

Tuition

When choosing a nursing program, considering tuition is important. However, paying for nursing school, regardless of which program you choose, can be difficult. You can use FAFSA to apply for federal loans to help pay for your education.

If you take out a loan, there’s a chance that you may end up in debt. Paying off debt can be especially strenuous. However, there are many programs that offer student loan forgiveness for nurses– you can check if you qualify for any of them.

NCLEX scores

You must pass the NCLEX exam to become a registered nurse. All nursing schools publish the percentage of their students who pass this exam. You can review this score to make an informed decision. A good nursing school will help you prepare for the NCLEX and, more importantly, will help you advance as a registered nurse.

Programs offered

Before enrolling, ensure that the school you choose has relevant academic programs that suit your needs. Check the curriculum of the programs offered. Remember that a robust curriculum will go a long way in helping you advance your career as a registered nurse.

Graduation rate

Along with other factors, you should also consider the graduation rates for each nursing program before making a decision. The percentage of undergraduate students who finish their program in 4-6 years is used to calculate the graduation rate. A high graduation rate is a positive indicator.

Next Steps

Selecting the right nursing school and program can be difficult, but we hope our guide has helped you make an informed decision. While the path of becoming a nurse is challenging, it’s a rewarding journey.

How to choose the right nursing program

Choosing the ideal nursing program demands an analysis of important factors, such as location, tuition and school ratings. Read on for more.

Location

Location is one of the first aspects to consider because, for most schools, the tuition varies if you’re from the state or not. The difference at University of Wisconsin – Madison is $28,632, for example.

Tuition

With so many top nursing schools to choose from, you can be sure of the best financial conditions. Contact an academic advisor and ask about loans, scholarships and federal initiatives, such as work-study jobs and the FAFSA.

NCLEX pass rate

All nursing students, no matter how good their grades are, can only start working if they pass the NCLEX exam. So take a closer look at schools with a rate above 90%.

Programs offered

In addition to finding the type of nursing program that meets your goals and market needs, it is also important to understand its methodology. A concept-based or evidence-based program can be entirely online or in person, and the outcomes differ according to the institution.

Graduation rate

Graduation rates are influenced by many variables, but choosing a school with a rate of at least 90% may be beneficial, as it indicates a high level of student assistance.

Next steps

After picking a few institutions to apply to, based on important characteristics such as location and school ratings, you’ll also need to consider how to pay for them and the employment prospects in the state.

And, start to think about graduation by reading our guide on nursing licensure and certification in Wisconsin. After all, you have to be prepared when the first employer contacts you.

Also, after graduating, no matter what state you choose to live in, you’ll need to earn CEU credits. Access our free Wisconsin CEU courses to ensure you meet the education requirements in the Badger State.

If you’re feeling daunted by all these post-graduation steps, ask advice from nurses working in Wisconsin and listen to those who are already part of the healthcare industry.

Methodology

In order to determine the best nursing schools in a state, Incredible Health compared the top schools among five categories: graduation rate, tuition, NCLEX pass rate, accreditation, and the number of nursing programs offered.

Each metric was scored on a 100-point scale with 100 representing the highest total for that category. Then we compiled the individual scores to get an overall score.
