What makes a best hospital in Washington

What are the factors that make a hospital a high-performing organization? In short, they are features that create a positive experience for patients and employees.

Benefits

After salary, employee benefits are one of the most important aspects of a top hospital. Among the hospitals that we listed here, you can find retirement plans, disability benefits and life insurance, for example.

Growth opportunity

Most of the top hospitals in Washington also offer good career opportunities. If you’re a nurse practitioner, note that Washington ranks No. 4 among the highest-paying states in this specialty, with a mean annual salary of $130,840. Nurse anesthetist is another good career option.

Employee satisfaction

Employee satisfaction can be accomplished in part by providing a positive workplace, which reduces occupational hazards like compassion fatigue and burnout.

High patient satisfaction

Providing high patient satisfaction is more than getting patients well. It’s about creating a memorable experience that encourages patients to return to the same organization in the future. There is also a link between employee and patient satisfaction: Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) ratings increase by 0.33% for each percent increase in employee engagement, according to a survey by the Advisory Board Company.

Other factors that make a top hospital

An improved safety record, customer service, and ethics also contribute to a hospital’s higher performance. Healthgrades revealed that a culture of excellence is important in classifying hospitals as America’s Best.

Safety record is critical

Hospital infections, medication errors or inaccurate documentation are examples of nursing mistakes that can be prevented with safety records. There is a greater likelihood of using these standards in top hospitals.

Hospital policies focus on customer services

These days, patients are taking a more active role in their own healthcare decisions. That’s why a customer-centric approach is essential to increase patient satisfaction.

Latest technology and training improve healthcare

Technology, in most cases, improves diagnosis and treatment of patients. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality states that, in speech-impaired patients, for instance, augmented reality (AR) can help improve communication.

Ethics lead the way

Values and ethics are the pillars of the best hospitals’. As medical technology advances, it facilitates the management of patients in several situations.

Next steps

If you’re a recent graduate with the right nursing expertise, or even an experienced nurse, a  high-performing hospital may boost your career. To land a job in such organizations, you need a strategy.

Build your resume

The first step is to apply the nursing resume guidelines provided by American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). You will save time writing about your experiences, making an organized document and avoid forgetting important details.

Join a nurses association

You can connect with a mentor through a nursing organization, or, when joining a nursing union, you can contribute to safer working conditions for your profession. American Nurses Association (ANA) is probably the most well-known nurses’ association, with the main goal of protecting the nursing profession.

Attend industry educational conferences and workshops

Attending nursing conferences is the best way to take part in workshops and training — which will also improve your resume. These events generally cost up to $799 to attend.

Keep up with continuing education requirements

In addition to conferences, are you interested in learning online from the comfort of your own home?

How to choose the right nursing program

Maryland is a great state in which to be a healthcare professional, and its nursing schools are top notch. While the most important variable is whether a particular program offers the degree that you want, but the one that’s your best fit will be dictated by your personal priorities. Considerations include location of each school’s campus, whether online classes are available, the school’s reputation, class size and faculty-to-student ratio, and tuition.

Location

The location of Maryland’s nursing schools is important both for convenience of those who plan to commute to in-person classes and for the medical facilities that each school partners with for clinical practice and internships. Many Maryland nursing programs leverage their proximity to the nation’s capital, while others that are located near underserved communities focus much of their attention on providing much-needed care to their neighbors.

Tuition

Tuition at Maryland’s top nursing programs range dramatically, with state universities offering the lowest per-credit fees to those who are state residents. All of the programs listed above are eligible for FAFSA support, and there are numerous scholarships and grants available. Check the websites of the school you choose, as well as other scholarship and financial aid resources.

NCLEX pass rate

Every nursing student who looks to graduation day as the gateway to their career knows that to get their license, they have to pass the NCLEX-RN exam. Many programs build dedicated test preparation into their curriculum while others assume that students who have met their graduation standards will also do well on the test. Schools who have a greater percentage of their students pass the test than the national average are proud of that accomplishment and make a point of publicizing notable NCLEX pass rates.

Programs offered

All of the Maryland nursing schools listed above are excellent, but a school’s reputation, NCLEX pass rates and tuition don’t mean anything if it doesn’t offer the nursing degree you need. Save yourself time and effort by starting your search by identifying the schools that offer your needed program.

Graduation rate

No matter how prestigious a school may be or how much a student wants a degree, life is unpredictable and many end up dropping out before graduation. The published graduation rate reflects how many students who begin a four-year undergraduate degree program complete it and graduate within six years. It also does not include metrics for students outside of the traditional four-year degree program. Though in some cases the graduation rate statistic may be a reflection on aspects of the school, in most cases students who fail to complete their program do so for personal reasons.

Next steps

Choosing Maryland for your nursing education is a great first step, but you still have a lot of work to do. Applying for nursing school requires focus and organization. You’ll need to collect transcripts and letters of recommendations, and submit all of the required paperwork according to each school’s requirements. It’s a significant effort, but well worth the time.

Whether you’re entering a four-year BSN program or pursuing a degree that will require less time, you’ll be done before you know it. If you have questions about continuing your career in Maryland, our community of nurses is ready to answer any questions you may have including about Maryland’s licensing and CEU requirements. Incredible Health is here to help and support you at every step of the way.

How to choose the right nursing program

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for registered nurses is projected to grow 9% by 2030. This means that it is necessary to be strategic when choosing a nursing program, to take advantage of this opportunity. Read our tips for help.

Location

Most cities in West Virginia are considered fairly small – even Charleston, the capital. Choose a college in the Mountain State to enjoy a tight-knit community and a positive lifestyle.

Tuition

Choosing a nursing program based on its tuition is reasonable, especially if you’re not from West Virginia, which can raise the cost. Also, check if the school offers work-study opportunities, student loans and scholarships.

NCLEX pass rate

It’s recommended to choose schools with at least a 90% NCLEX pass rate. For this purpose, schools usually offer an intensive course to prepare undergraduates for the exam, which helps them succeed on the first try.

Programs offered

There are various nursing career pathways, so if a school doesn’t have the program you’re looking for, it is worth continuing the search. The programs are generally competitive, so it is important to avoid starting a degree and not finishing it.

Graduation rate

A 90% graduation rate is a good indicator, in general. But it’s important to check if its curriculum is also of a high level, in addition to factors such as employment rates and the coursework itself.

Next steps

After analyzing each of the factors, such as location, tuition and school ratings, it is advisable to look at employment projections for the state.

To get your first job, you’ll need to start the licensure and certification processes. We help you with a guide to the nursing requirements in West Virginia. Read it tomake the process easier for yourself.

Many employers also have education requirements, as do states. Sign up on Incredible Health and access free West Virginia CEU courses to meet these criteria.

If you have specific questions, ask them directly to experienced nurses.
