Meet the Northwell Health Nurse Choir

Jul 28 2022

“It became a healing journey for a lot us. We got to use the power of music to heal others, and to heal ourselves as well.”   Emanuel Remilus, member of the Northwell Health Nurse Choir

During the worst days of the global pandemic, New York was one of the hardest hit places on the planet. The staff at Northwell Health System, New York’s largest private health system, arguably saw more patients than any other organization. Yet in the midst of darkness and despair, the Northwell Health Nurse Choir emerged to offer hope and healing.

Who is the Northwell Health Nurse Choir?

The Northwell Health Nurse Choir is a group of 18 nurses from New York’s largest private health system, the 23-hospital Northwell Health System. The group is made up of front-line nurses who came together during the pandemic, using music to capture the essence of the collaboration, teamwork, and sacrifice that healthcare workers around the country demonstrated during the worst days of the global pandemic

What’s their story? How did they start?

The nurses who make up the Northwell Health Nurse Choir are all health-care heroes in their own right. They were each hard at work, doing their best to deliver high quality patient care through the worst days of New York’s battle against COVID-19, when an email arrived inviting the system’s entire nursing staff to submit 30-second auditions to participate in what was to be a one-time event: A virtually-recorded song that would be broadcast at a celebrity concert benefiting Nurse Heroes Live on Thanksgiving Day 2020.

Those selected each prepared their own recording of either Stand by Me or Lean on Me, and those videos were spliced together for the performance. The nurses reveled in the chance to share their talents to raise awareness of the global nursing shortage and to provide funds for nursing scholarships. The end result was met with such enthusiasm that one year later the group was invited to participate in the popular NBC television show America’s Got Talent! Rehearsing for the show was the first time the individual members got to meet one another face-to-face.

The national audience that watched the show fell in love with the choir. Their reception was wildly enthusiastic, and they were pushed through to the competition’s finals by celebrity host Howie Mandel, who used the show’s “Golden Buzzer” to fast-track them. Though they did not win in the finale, the Northwell Health Nurse Choir inspired the nation.

Where have they appeared?

Though the heady days of America’s Got Talent are long gone, the Northwell Health Nurse’s Choir continues to be both popular and inspiring. They have been invited to appear and perform at all types of occasions and appearances, including:

  • In December of 2021, the choir performed at Carnegie Hall as part of the MasterVoices’ A Joyful Noise concert marking the holiday season and celebrating a return to live performances following the pandemic.
  • At the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s national conference in Atlanta, Georgia, they performed You Will Be Found from the Broadway show Dear Evan Hansen while a photo montage of nurses during the pandemic was shown.
  • The group performed “We Need A Little Christmas” at “In Performance at The White House: Spirit of the Season.”
  • The choir was invited to perform on Live with Kelly and Ryan as part of their “Very New York Christmas” show.
  • The group performed at the 2021 Time Person of the Year Awards celebration.
  • Northwell Health Nurses Choir was the opening act for Train at the Jones Beach Theater in June of 2022.
  • The choir performed at Fenway Park for Boston Red Sox’ Nurses Night.
  • On March 17, 2022, the group led the261st Annual New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade with fellow essential worker heroes.

Where will they appear next?

While the choir has no new events posted on their Instagram page, their recent appearance as the opening act for Train at the group’s AM Gold Tour performance at the Jones Beach Theater may be an indication of things to come. In the meantime, they will continue to be remarkable ambassadors for their organization, singing and shining a spotlight on the nursing profession.

6 Levels of Nursing: A Beginner’s Guide to Nursing Ranks

Jul 28 2022

Nurse Types / Levels of Nursing

The hierarchy of nurses may not be clear to the layperson. Just like any other career, however, nurses have the option to progress through the ranks as they develop their careers. The levels of nursing are dictated by a combination of advanced degrees, nursing licenses, experience, and type of nursing work being performed.

Below are 6 different levels of nursing you may experience throughout your career.

1. Certified nursing assistant (CNA)

CNAs provide a wide variety of services to their patients. The main activities they help patients with are bathing, eating, and mobility. They also help nurses check patients’ vital signs, such as blood pressure and pulse rate.

Before entering a CNA program, you must have your high school diploma or GED. Most CNA programs take between 6-12 weeks to finish but could take up to six months depending on the level of education you wish to receive.

2. Licensed practical/vocational nurse (LPN/LVN)

LPNs are licensed nurses who provide care such as helping patients with feeding, dressing, hygiene, transfers, measuring and recording vital signs, and treating basic wounds or changing dressings.

In order to become an LPN, you must finish a practical nursing course and pass the NCLEX-PN exam. Experience is also helpful as most of the duties are learned on the job.

3. Registered nurse (RN)

Registered nurses‘ job duties vary significantly from one nurse to the next. Depending on the department and specialty, they may supervise other nurses and oversee patient care, or serve as a direct caretaker for patients. RNs may also be responsible for administering medication, drawing blood and collecting lab work, and monitoring patient vitals and progress.

In order to become an RN, you need to have completed an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing and pass the NCLEX exam. Gaining experience in the specialty in which you would like to practice is also an important part of the process.

4. Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)

APRNs are registered nurses with a higher level of autonomy, who have extensive experience education – typically a master’s degree in nursing. Different types of advanced practice registered nurses include:

  • Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist
  • Certified Nurse-Midwife
  • Clinical Nurse Specialist
  • Nurse Practitioner

In many states, APRNs can prescribe medication and practice without oversight from a doctor or other supervisor. It can take about six years to become a licensed APRN. The BSN to MSN and RN to MSN bridge programs can help you earn your master’s degree faster.

5. Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

A Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree is the highest level of education a nursing professional can obtain. DNPs possess extensive knowledge of nursing best practices and focus on working in nursing administration roles or patient care.

Nursing professionals with DNPs can work in health informatics, nursing management, or organizational leadership. Some hold thought-leadership positions shaping state and national health policies.

To become a DNP, you must complete up to 8 years of nursing education. The number of years required to complete your degree depends on where you are starting from in your career. If you are starting from scratch with no schooling or work experience, expect to spend the full eight years completing the program if attending school full-time. Most DNP programs require applicants to have a minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), while others prefer a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree. If you have a bachelor’s or master’s degree, there are bridge programs that help cut time in school:

  • BSN to DNP – 3-4 years
  • MSN to DNP – 1-2 years

6. Chief Nursing Officer (CNO)

Think of a Chief Nursing Officer as the CEO of a nursing department. Their primary role involves communicating with and overseeing nursing departments to ensure all team members follow nursing best practices. CNOs can handle any nursing issues that arise. They also manage business matters to keep the hospital’s nursing department operating efficiently.

Becoming a CNO takes extensive education and training. Nursing candidates who wish to work in this role must obtain a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or higher, with a secondary focus on business administration. As the highest administrative role within the nursing profession, chief nursing officers have all the same skills as nurses, plus leadership and management training. Many aspiring CNOs work in mid-level nursing management as charge nurses or as nursing unit directors before becoming CNOs. This allows nurses to gain the experience needed to run a nursing department.

What makes a best hospital in Missouri

Aside from achieving Magnet status, these hospitals provide valuable benefits and growth opportunities for staff, along with high satisfaction rates for both employees and patients.

Benefits

Nurses looking for new employment seek benefits beyond salary. Compensation packages can include vacation time, sick leave, discounts, financial assistance for homebuyers, tuition assistance, wellness programs, and many more advantageous benefits.

Growth opportunity

Furthering your education for a new job title as a nurse is an enticing aspect of the role. Whether that’s pursuing a career as a nurse anesthetist (CRNA) or nurse practitioner, growth opportunities in the healthcare industry can provide additional responsibilities and higher salaries.

Employee satisfaction

Hospitals with higher rates of employee satisfaction can be desirable for nurses looking for a new working environment. With positive surroundings, nurses are less likely to deal with such struggles as job fatigue and burnout.

High patient satisfaction

Patient satisfaction is another factor that matters greatly in hospital settings. When employees are content, this can reflect back on patients. Encouraging a positive environment benefits staff and patients alike.

Other factors that make a top hospital

When hospitals demonstrate dedication to safety, customer service, technological advancement, and upholding ethical practices, they show their levels of quality and care.

Safety record is critical

Hospitals that follow safety protocols are more likely to reduce transmission of other infections and illnesses. When the staff exhibits mindfulness in their safety, this promotes a higher standard for the hospital. Using the proper techniques and procedures can place added value in a healthcare environment.

Hospital policies focus on customer services

Since hospitals are in a customer-focused industry, it’s important to foster the right customer service approaches. Facilities that work to promote patient care in every facet are more highly sought after places of employment.

Latest technology and training improve healthcare

Technology is constantly evolving, so it’s vital to remain informed. The top hospitals in Missouri understand this need for technological advancement and training in order to best serve their patients and staff. These practices can improve diagnostic testing and treatment, while also reducing errors in emergency situations.

Ethics lead the way

A hospital that leads with ethical practices is important. Patient care and satisfaction go beyond the everyday health policies. Working for more affordable options, comprehensive treatment, and level of care regardless of patient background or culture paves the way for a more honorable standard.

Next steps

If you’re an experienced nurse or have just recently graduated, using your nursing expertise to find the right job at a top hospital in Missouri can help in your career goals.

Though looking for a job can be daunting, especially without the proper strategies, there are  easy guides to land your dream role in one of Missouri’s top hospitals.

Build your resume

To better stand out among the other qualified candidates, you should personalize your resume for the hospital and job you want. Start by identifying your skills and knowledge, and emphasize accredited certifications that will set you apart from other nursing candidates. Another factor to consider is having substantial references who are able to speak to your work standards.

Join a nurses association

Connecting with other nurses is a great way to gain access to networking and job opportunities. There are many beneficial nursing organizations that could build out your connections.

Check to see if your state has a nurses union, and consider the pros and cons when you’re deciding to join one or not.

Attend industry educational conferences and workshops

With the healthcare system rapidly advancing, it’s important to stay up-to-date on any new practices and tools. Attending educational events and workshops are  effective methods for furthering your knowledge.

You can continue to learn relevant skills, such as new technologies and techniques, which will make you stand out on the job search. It’s always helpful to ask for advice from industry professionals at these conferences.

Keep up with continuing education requirements

Did you know that different states often have different continuing education requirements? Incredible Health offers free CEU courses that serve to help you.

What makes a best hospital in North Carolina

Hospitals with Magnet status have many common features, such as impressive benefits, opportunities for growth, and satisfaction for both employees and patients.

Benefits

Beyond their awards and accreditations, hospitals in North Carolina provide value in their salaries and benefits for nurses as well. These can include vacation time, sick leave, employee discounts, financial assistance for certain home buying and tuition programs, wellness benefits, and more.

Growth opportunity

The chance to grow in the healthcare industry is why many nurses pursue this career path. With opportunities to advance as nurse anesthetists (CRNA) or nurse practitioners, nurses seek out new employers for continued education and added responsibilities.

Employee satisfaction

In a healthcare setting, the importance of employee satisfaction should not be overlooked. Positive environments foster higher employee satisfaction, and it also helps to reduce job fatigue or burnout.

High patient satisfaction

Patient satisfaction is key, and often a reflection of employee satisfaction. Pleasant work environments provide more gratification and peace of mind for both patients and employees.

Other factors that make a top hospital

Working at a top hospital also means there’s a focus on safety practices, customer service, technological advancements, and ethical practices.

Safety record is critical

Safety should be a priority for a hospital’s standards. Safety records demonstrate a commitment to procedures and protocol.

To better reduce or prevent infection, healthcare professionals should carry out top-of-the-line techniques and implement safety standards. A majority of hospitals with these measures help to prevent infection.

Hospital policies focus on customer services

Hospitals are a customer-centric space, and the focus on customer service helps to determine which hospitals are reliable.

When there are policies in place to benefit patients, this demonstrates a level of care and makes hospitals in North Carolina a desirable place for employment.

Latest technology and training improve healthcare

Implementing new technologies and training tools shows care for patients and staff. When hospitals set higher standards for diagnosis and treatment, it improves patient care.

Hospitals that stay up-to-date with technological trends and constantly train in new skills promote a higher standard of health delivery. The top North Carolina hospitals with these practices demonstrate preparedness for emergencies.

Ethics lead the way

When hospital systems lead with ethics, they put people at the forefront.

Ethical standards in healthcare create a better connection and management system for patients, regardless of their situation. When hospitals in North Carolina focus on delivering quality healthcare to all patients, they’re providing ethical and invaluable service.
