A professor, administrator, school counselor, or manager are great options. Co-workers can also be good choices, but anyone in a supervising role is generally preferred. Family members are discouraged and often considered biased sources for many schools.

It is best to ask for a letter of recommendation in person and to give enough time for them to write and submit the letter of recommendation. It can also be helpful to provide specifics on the schools you are applying to and why you are interested in their nursing programs.

Be sure to inquire about your school’s deadlines and communicate this to those recommending you. 

Many schools have specific guidelines on letters of recommendation and sometimes request a specific format for the letters. You can always reach out to the admissions office if you need clarification or have questions.

What should a nursing recommendation letter entail? 

Letters of recommendation do not need to be long. The structure of the letter should include:

  • a professional greeting
  • Introduction
  • several body paragraphs
  • conclusion
  • formal signature.

The most common greeting is “To Whom It May Concern” if the identity of the person is unknown. The writer should also address their relationship to the applicant in the greeting. The formal signature should include the writer’s contact information. 

The body of the letter should address the applicant’s professionalism, character, and ability to be a good asset to the applicant’s desired program. Examples of leadership and academic success should be included.

Specific examples of the applicant’s unique skills and experiences are a good way to stand out in your letter of recommendation. Any examples of leadership in projects, student organizations, or problem-solving are good ways to show how the applicant can succeed in the desired program.

I am writing this letter of recommendation on behalf of Ms. Emily Colley, whom I have worked with for the past three years. Ms. Colley has worked with me at the Early Childhood Development Center as one of our preschool classroom assistants. I would gladly recommend Ms. Colley for the St. Louis University Nursing Program. Ms. Colley has a great passion for caring for others which she has demonstrated every day in her classroom assistant role. She has taken on more responsibility by leading a project to improve our playground’s safety and quality for the children. Oschner Health Welcoming Ukrainian Nurses in Pilot Program

Ochsner Health, a not-for-profit health system based in New Orleans, recently announced it will be the first U.S. hospital system to commit to an innovative program that will offer employment to Ukrainian nurses.

Ochsner Health will be the first U.S. hospital system to commit to the “Passport2Liberty” initiative created by CGFNS International. The Passport2Liberty will help Ukrainian nurses who want to migrate to the United States and continue their careers here. CGFNS is the largest credentials evaluation organization for nursing in the world. 

Ochsner Health and the Catholic Health Association of the United States will pilot the program with help from The American Hospital Association (AHA), the American Organization for Nursing Leadership, and an international nurse placement agency. Ochsner Health encompasses forty hospitals and more than 300 health and urgent care centers across Louisiana, Mississippi, and the Gulf South.

Ochsner Health expects to welcome eight Ukrainian nurses into their ranks this fall, employing them and providing them with support as they integrate into their new homes. Warner Thomas, President and CEO of Ochsner Health, said in the release, “I am so proud of our creative and empathetic nursing teams at Ochsner Health, who saw a need to help their fellow nurses from Ukraine, and shared with leadership this idea to participate. Not only will this program be part of our international RN recruitment strategy, but it’s the right thing to do.”

In a release issued by his organization, CGFNS President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Franklin A. Shaffer spoke of the need that the Passport2Liberty initiative is filling. 

“CGFNS created the Passport2Liberty initiative to address the challenges faced by Ukrainian nurses during this time of crisis,” he said. “It is grounded in the belief and commitment that safe, orderly, regular migration is a human right, and that the global community has a responsibility to ensure that refugees in all situations are aptly supported and empowered.”

The eight Ukrainian nurses will commit to remaining with Ochsner for a minimum of two years.  Speaking of her enthusiasm for the role that Ochsner will play, System Chief Nursing Officer Tracey Moffatt said in the release, “I’m grateful that we are able to sponsor nurses from the country of Ukraine and hope that they can heal and find joy in their work here at Ochsner. Nurses have a legacy of bravery and strength in the most difficult times, starting when Florence Nightingale brought nurses to aid soldiers in the Crimean War. We welcome these brave nurses and their families into our community.”

How do you become a clinical nurse instructor in 3 steps?

Becoming a clinical nurse instructor requires an advanced nursing degree and RN licensure. Follow these three steps to get started in your new nursing career.

Step 1 – Become a registered nurse

The first step in your journey to becoming a clinical nurse instructor is to earn your registered nurse (RN) licensure. You can become an RN with an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).  However, most healthcare employers require RNs to hold a Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN).

Earn a BSN degree

You can earn a BSN in one of three ways. If you are new to nursing, you can attend a four-year BSN program at an accredited nursing school.

If you have a bachelor’s degree in a different field you can participate in an accelerated BSN program. This can take as little as 1 year. 

If you are already an RN, you can enroll in an RN to BSN program so you can work and attend school at the same time.

Pass the NCLEX-RN

After you’ve completed your BSN program, you must pass the NCLEX-RN exam to earn your licensure. Before you take the exam, you can brush up on your skills with the NCLEX-RN exam study guides and other test preparation materials provided by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). This is  the licensing body which administers the exams.

Step 2 – Accumulate experience

After you have your RN license, you’ll want to spend at least two years gaining valuable on-the-job experience. Since nursing students are evaluated in a variety of healthcare settings, you may want to gain expertise as an RN in areas like medical surgical or pediatrics.

Helpful skills and experience

Clear communication is a must-have skill if you plan to work as a clinical nurse instructor. You’ll need to provide meaningful feedback to your students, as well as have conversations with patients who have agreed to be part of the clinical training process.

Other helpful abilities include:

  • Adaptability. You never know when you’ll need to change up a pre-planned exercise because of unforeseen circumstances.
  • Approachability. Students become more proficient when they feel comfortable approaching you with questions or concerns.
  • Clinical competence. If you’re going to teach students nursing skills, you must first master them yourself.

Changing specialty to a clinical nurse instructor

If you’re already working as an RN and interested in switching your specialty to clinical nurse instructor, it’s a fairly easy switch to make.

Let’s say you’re already working as an emergency room RN. In your current role, you’ve been exposed to a variety of illnesses and injuries. You can take that experience and roll it over into clinical expertise.

Mary Greeley Medical Center
