Incredible Health’s New Retention Suite Helps Hospitals Attract Nurses And Reduce Turnover

Oct 07 2021

By: Iman Abuzeid, MD

Over the past year and a half, the nursing shortage crisis has escalated dramatically. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated nurse turnover and burnout rates, compounded by deadlier variants and the Great Resignation. Understaffing means more patients per nurse and more shifts per week, leading to lower quality of patient care.

At Incredible Health, we are committed to helping health care systems hire experienced, permanent nurses quickly, in order to help healthcare professionals find and do their best work, and live better lives.

That’s why today we’re thrilled to announce the formal launch of our Retention Suite, specifically designed to help hospitals retain permanent nursing talent during the Great Resignation.

The Incredible Health Retention Suite is a set of hiring tools that helps nurses find permanent jobs they’ll love and helps hospitals retain the nurses already on staff. Nurses hired through Incredible Health have a 15% higher retention rate compared to nurses hired through traditional channels at one year. We developed this new suite of tools because hiring nurses that are the right fit, and hiring enough of them, reduces turnover. Effective hiring leads to effective retention.

The Retention Suite also helps nurses make more informed employment decisions. We
flip the script, with hospitals applying to nurses, not the other way around, which allows busy nurses to interview at multiple health systems and complete thorough job searches. Each nurse gets to leverage Incredible Health’s enhanced screening and matching algorithms—which assess 70+ specialties and 250+ nursing skills—to find a role that is the best fit for them. Nurses can consider multiple employers in order to find the best role for them, driving job satisfaction. When nurses are happy in their jobs, they remain with employers for longer.

“The Incredible Health Retention Suite should be the future of the nursing profession. Not only does it have the potential to create better career opportunities for individual nurses, but it promotes positive work environments,” said Shenita Anderson RN, an emergency room nurse who used Incredible Health to find her current permanent role. “This is ultimately reflected in the quality of care that patients receive from nurses who are happy in the roles they serve and employers who understand the importance of pursuing excellence in health care.”

Today, more than 500 top hospitals nationwide, including Johns Hopkins Health System, HCA Healthcare, Stanford Health Care, Kaiser Permanente, Providence St. Joseph, Yale New Haven Health, Baylor Scott and White, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Baptist Health South Florida and many others hire permanent nursing staff with Incredible Health. These hospitals are taking advantage of the enhanced tools which allow them to hire more nurses, reach appropriate staffing levels, and reduce burnout and turnover.

These advanced offerings include:

  • Benchmarking data and best practices: Hospitals can compare their own hiring funnel and operations anonymously to competing hospitals locally, regionally and nationally.
  • Team activity dashboards: Recruiting team managers’ can leverage analytics on their teams’ activity, to gain insight into each recruiter’s hiring funnel and share best practices across the team and system.
  • SMS text capabilities: Recruiters can cut through the noise and send candidates SMS and in-app messages. Messages sent through the Incredible Health platform have an 80% response rate.
  • Automated interview scheduling: Incredible Health schedules 70% of interviews automatically, significantly reducing time to hire.
  • In-app references: Nurses can add pre-collected references to their profiles to speed hiring managers’ decision-making.
  • Advanced screening: Incredible Health’s algorithms automatically check for malpractice and licenses to ensure the highest quality candidates.
  • Employer showcase pages: Employers can customize their employer branding to appeal to nurses and communicate what makes their organization a great place to work.
  • Mobile-optimized nurse onboarding: Nurses can take advantage of iOS, Android, and mobile web applications to make it even easier to use Incredible Health and find and do their best work.
  • Mental health tools: Nurses can use a daily journal and a nurse community to help nurses manage stress, practice gratitude, and support one another.

The pandemic exacerbated the nursing turnover crisis which directly impacts patient outcomes and hospital finances. Engaged, happy nurses provide better patient care, so we developed the Retention Suite to help ensure nurses find careers that fulfill them and increase their job tenure.

We are committed to providing a delightful experience for nurses and hospitals alike, to continue to improve the quality of care and decrease healthcare costs across the nation.

Incredible Health Now Used by 60% of US News & World Report’s Best Hospitals

Jun 10 2021

60% of U.S. News Best Hospitals hire permanent nurses with Incredible Health

Since Incredible Health launched in 2018, it has been our mission to radically transform how nurses are hired. Driven by our vision of helping healthcare professionals live better lives, we constantly innovate to ensure nurses find better, more fulfilling roles, while we support healthcare employers to quickly hire the permanent talent they desperately need.

We’re excited to share a few important milestones we’ve recently reached: we have now partnered with 60% of the top-ranked hospitals in the United States and have helped thousands of nurses find their dream roles. Since our Series A funding round 18 months ago, we’ve also:

  • Increased revenue 1000%
  • Increased nurse job placements 500%
  • Retained 100% of our customers, and
  • Increased net revenue retention to 200%, as existing customers expand their hiring on the platform

Our path to this milestone

At the end of 2019, Incredible Health was only serving health systems in Texas and California. We now operate in 14 states across the country. We’ve also deepened our presence within Texas and California, the states with the most registered nurses and hospital beds in the U.S, to help fully realize our vision of transforming nurse hiring. 50% of all hospital beds in both Texas and California are in facilities that hire permanent nurses with Incredible Health. We also serve 65% and 70% of the hospital beds in Los Angeles, CA and Dallas, TX, respectively.

Today, more than 350 hospitals nationwide, including Johns Hopkins Health System, HCA Healthcare, Stanford Health Care, Kaiser Permanente, Providence St. Joseph, Jefferson Health, Houston Methodist, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and many others hire permanent nursing staff with Incredible Health.

Hospitals send an interview request every four minutes on the platform, flipping the script and giving healthcare workers unprecedented control over their careers. We’re honored that so many top hospitals trust Incredible Health with one of their most important drivers of success: hiring enough permanent nurses to deliver high-quality patient care.

David Jones, Chief Human Resources Officer at Stanford Health Care, a longtime partner of Incredible Health, shared:

To do our best work, we need to have the talent to deliver quality care to those in need. With the ongoing shortage, it’s taking our team longer than we’d like to find the ideal specialized, experienced candidates for hard-to-fill positions. With Incredible Health, we consistently hire in permanent roles in under three weeks.

David Jones | Chief Human Resources Officer, Stanford Health Care

Continuing to solve the nursing shortage

Even before COVID-19, the U.S. faced a major nursing shortage and nurses experienced higher rates of burnout and stress due to long hours and challenging work environments. The pandemic exacerbated these problems and hospitals are now grappling with unprecedented staff shortages due to astoundingly high turnover rates. Thankfully, nurses hired using Incredible Health have a 15% higher retention rate than nurses hired through traditional channels.

To further support hospitals and healthcare systems, we launched our Pandemic Hiring Suite which allows customers to hire permanent, specialized nurses in less than 12 days, our Nurse Wellness Toolkit, which includes two products to help nurses combat stress and burnout, as well as analytics tools that allow health system talent teams to:

  • Benchmark against anonymized peer organizations on hiring speed, utilization, salary data, and other metrics, to ensure their hiring process is competitive
  • Accurately forecast future hires to improve workforce planning
  • Manage individual recruiter performance and candidate progress through the hiring funnel, so teams can optimize and get the staff they need faster

The number of nurses on our platform grew over 800% in the past 18-months, with thousands of nurses securing permanent roles. On average, Incredible Health saves each hospital we work with at least $2M per year per facility in travel nurse, overtime, and HR costs.

Jeff Jordan, general partner at Andreessen Horowitz and Incredible Health board member, shared:

Incredible Health has done an outstanding job building out both sides of its marketplace. Given the national focus on healthcare infrastructure and the healthcare talent shortage, the company’s platform is quickly becoming the default choice for any hospital looking to recruit and hire permanent nurses.

Jeff Jordan | Andreessen Horowitz & Incredible Health Board Member

We started Incredible Health because we believed nurse hiring was fundamentally broken, for both nurses and health facilities. Our rapid growth over the last 18 months shows there is a new way to hire permanent nurses while delivering a delightful experience to both talent and employers.

Nurses are the backbone of our healthcare system. They deserve more control over their professional careers and hospitals deserve the technology to quickly hire the staff they need.

Healthcare Sales Veteran Joins Incredible Health to Help Solve Nationwide Healthcare Staffing Crisis

Mar 04 2021

We are excited to welcome John Eads to the Incredible Health team as Vice President of Sales.

John is a healthcare veteran, with more than 25 years of experience building and managing successful sales teams. His experience includes 12 years at athenahealth, where his team’s exponential revenue growth led the company to IPO on NASDAQ.

We sat down with John to hear about his background and why he’s excited to join the Incredible Health team.

How did you get your start in sales?

I started my career selling physician practice management systems and Electronic Medical Records to physicians groups. I then became a partner at Salcris Systems that grew to become the largest Physician Revenue Cycle software technology company in the Southern U.S. Fast forward some 25 years later, and the majority of my career has been spent building and managing sales teams in healthcare technology.

What brought you to Incredible Health?

I have taken multiple startups public, most notably athenahealth, and was looking for the next healthcare technology company that I could help grow into a global brand. Incredible Health was an obvious choice for me. We are fundamentally changing how experienced nurses and hospital systems come together to provide excellent patient care. I was very impressed with Incredible Health’s leadership, the marketplace technology, and how much nurses and health systems love the platform.

What industry trends are you watching most closely?

I am watching the heroic effort frontline healthcare workers are making during the pandemic, and the effect it has on nurse retention rates and employment trends. I am also watching the surge in digital health, from healthcare marketplaces, to telehealth, which is driving even more need for registered nurses and nurse practitioners.

What are your team’s priorities this year?

We are focused on growth. Incredible Health has built a solid foundation of delighted nurses and hospital system clients. Both groups give us 5-star ratings for drastically reducing the time and effort it takes to find a job and hire experienced, permanent nurses. We are building on that foundation and strategically growing our customer base across the country.

Have you had an experience with a nurse that made a positive impact on you?

I have been in healthcare for many years and have seen firsthand that nurses are the face of compassionate care, and they’re the backbone of every health system. The evolving roles of nurses are essential to the digital healthcare future.

Strategic Permanent Nurse Workforce Planning in COVID-19 and Beyond

Feb 17 2021

On February 17th, 2021, Iman Abuzeid, M.D., Co-Founder & CEO of Incredible Health, Javon Bea, CEO of MercyHealth, Debra Potempa, System Chief Nursing Officer of MercyHealth, and Linda Roan, Chief Nursing Officer of Banner Health, discussed how hospitals can use data and automation to enhance their strategic workforce planning, hiring, nurse retention, and patient outcomes.

Key takeaways

  • COVID-19 has exacerbated the existing nurse shortage, and has made nurse retention even more difficult
  • Speed matters when hiring nurses. 68% of nurses accept their first offer, and 61% of nurses accept their first offer even if subsequent offers have hire pay.
  • Ensure both nurses and recruiters are operating at the top of their skill sets: ensure nurses are working at the top of their license, and automate low skill recruiting work like sourcing
  • Seek out feedback from nurses, including those that are staying, for example with structured interviews, and address their concerns wherever possible
  • Prioritize nurse career development & facilitate internal role transfers
  • Give nurses flexibility in their schedules with more part time shifts to help with burnout challenges

Industry leading panelists

Javon Bea has served as President and CEO of Mercyhealth for over 30 years, furthering its mission to make lives better for patients and their families. Under his leadership, Mercyhealth has grown into a vertically integrated, multi-regional system with 7 hospitals, 800+ employed physician partners and 8,000+ employee/partners, 85 primary and specialty care locations, a home health and hospice division, and a wholly owned and operated insurance company.

Known for world class workforce planning, Debra Potempa has served as Chief Nursing Officer for Mercyhealth for over 11 years. Under her leadership, MercyHealth earned the Magnet designation in recognition of its high-quality patient care and outcomes. Debra’s industry-leading nurse hiring and retention strongly contributed to MercyHealth earning its designation. Debra is an alumna of De Paul University and Saint Xavier University, where she was a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the honor society for nursing excellence.

Linda Roan is the Chief Nursing Officer of East Morgan County Hospital, part of Banner Health. Linda has been a Colorado RN for over 44 years. Incredible Health Announces Suite of Products for Nurses to Combat Stress and Burnout, Adds New Locations

Dec 08 2020

December 8, 2020 | Iman Abuzeid, MD

Nurses have faced indescribable physical and mental hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic, from higher rates of exposure and mortality to increased reports of burnout and declining mental health. Our frontline workers have placed themselves at risk and are suffering from excessive stress. Through it all, nurses have remained dedicated caregivers and beacons of hope to their patients. As the health crisis continues, our nurses are owed the same respect and care they so willingly provide, as well as resources to ensure their wellbeing.

According to a recent study of New York-based healthcare workers during the COVID-19 peak in April 2020, nurses were among those reporting the highest levels of stress with 64% of nurses and advanced practice providers reporting symptoms of acute stress – ranging from nightmares to inability to stop thinking about the virus. Loneliness and insomnia were also prevalent in this group, as was fear of infecting family and friends. The study, conducted by experts at New York-Presbyterian, noted that nurses experience these stressors at a higher rate as they spend more time delivering direct patient care.

At Incredible Health, we’re committed to supporting nurses and providing a safe place for them to reflect and recharge. It’s part of our vision of helping healthcare professionals live better lives. We are dedicated to developing a community for nurses at every stage of their career, from finding a permanent job to offering support and resources when times get tough.

That’s why we’re proud to announce a suite of products designed to help nurses combat stress and burnout. These new resources help nurses build community, seek support and advice, and reflect on their workdays. We hope these tools will help nurses care for themselves and their mental health during the ongoing pandemic and beyond.

The new features include:

The Incredible Health Nurse Community

A free online community built exclusively for nurses.

We created the Incredible Health Nurse Community to offer nurses a safe place to support one another during periods of stress and uncertainty. Nurses have the option to post to the Nurse Community anonymously to get the advice and support they need without fear of employers seeing the content. Conversations happening in the community range from advice on how to transition between specialties to strategies for coping with burnout. There are also lighthearted conversations on a variety of topics, like favorite scrub brands.

A Daily Nurse Journal

A free digital journaling platform.

We created a digital journal where nurses take inventory of their emotions with structured daily prompts designed to help them process stress more effectively. Nurse burnout was a pervasive problem even before the pandemic, with 54% of nurses in a recent study reporting some burnout symptoms. According to a study in the Journal of Nursing Education and Practice, written reflection has a positive effect on the ability of nurses to handle stress, burnout, and trauma/compassion fatigue. We built the digital journal feature into our platform with the hopes that, when combined with our other features, it alleviates some of the stress associated with the nursing role.

Every U.S. nurse can access both the Nurse Community and Daily Nurse Journal for free in the Incredible Health app, available on the web, iOS, and Android.

“As a nurse myself, I cannot begin to stress the importance of having a trusted community to lean on for support, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Lea Zinyemba, RN, a Personal Talent Advocate on the Incredible Health platform. “The pandemic has made nursing, an already stressful career, even more challenging and a strong support network and community like Incredible Health is essential for nurses to navigate their careers and have access to resources to manage their day-to-day.”

When a nurse is looking for a new role, in addition to full access to automated matching and scheduling, we pair them with a Personal Talent Advocate, like Lea, who helps them navigate their careers. Their Talent Advocate provides interview coaching, helps evaluate their job options, and shares resume tips. We are the only platform where nurses have access to this kind of one-on-one support backed by technology at scale.

In addition to new features, we are excited to announce our expansion to health systems in Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, Iowa, Colorado, and Nevada. Serving these new states will allow us to help more nurses find the right permanent role and more health systems urgently fill vacancies, as hospitalization rates skyrocket nationwide. Throughout the pandemic, we have helped hospitals hire the permanent nurses required to deliver better care to patients, minimize burnout from excessive overtime, and reduce significant costs associated with temporary travel nurses.

We have enhanced our platform throughout the pandemic to help hospitals and nurses find permanent roles with a speed-to-hire time of 12 days. These new free nurse services demonstrate our continued commitment to nurses and health systems, and further our mission to help healthcare professionals live better lives and to do their best work.

More information on the new products can be found here and our expansion to new locations can be found here.
