RN Burnout After 1 Year

I just finished my first year as an RN new grad. I work in a Neurology unit specializing in stroke, seizure, and spin surgery patients. Lately I’ve been noticing a lack of interest in my work and increase in my dissatisfaction of my job. I have great co-workers but for some reason I feel so burnt out already. My empathy and compassion for my patients is little to none and I am becoming increasingly more impatient at work. Is it common to experience burnout this early in my career? I am ready to “throw in the towel” on bedside nursing. I don’t feel a sense of fulfillment in my job. Am I acting too soon? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

There are so many different jobs you can do with a nursing degree. I’ve never worked in a hospital all these years because of the flexibility agency nursing gives me. I suggest checking out “Wholw Life Nurse” to help narrow down specialties that may reignite your spark. Best of luck!

Yes ma’am it is very common. It happens after the excitement and honey moon stage of being a new grad and being super excited about your career. The pandemic made it much worse in my opinion. Burnt out and compassion fatigue happens sooner than we expect. It is due to the workload/ requirements of being a bedside nurse . If you feel Burnt out already trying switching to a different unit or switch to an outpatient pre op or ambulatory RN position (clinics).

Nursing is the best career that enables you to switch jobs without having to get a new degree or license. Look for something that excites you. Don't throw in the towel on nursing, just switch your position!

I totally understand where you’re coming from! Plus you entered a very stressful unit. It may not be your love and I would suggest looking for something new that interest you whether in the hospital or outside of it. Don’t feel bad for feeling the way you do. I stayed in a job I couldn’t stand for three years because I got stuck . Don’t wait like I did, start looking now and hopefully you find something soon. The more hats you wear in nursing the more well rounded you become.
