License resource for nurses

A comprehensive guide to nurse licensure.

Career Resources / Nursing Licenses

Initial licensing process

Becoming a nurse is no easy feat! Let Incredible Health help you. We’ve compiled information on the steps for earning your nursing license in each state.

There are many things to consider when beginning the licensing process. What you decide to specialize in can determine the license you need. Nurses can practice in many environments, including physicians’ offices, schools, home healthcare, nursing care facilities, outpatient clinics, and hospitals. Each setting may require different licenses. Here are some posts to help guide the licensing process:

  • Required education
  • Taking the NCLEX exam

Choosing a nursing license

The process of choosing a nursing license can be daunting. Here is an overview of some of the different license types:

CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant): The CNA license is an entry-level position for nurses. This is a great opportunity for people who are curious about nursing and want to learn more.

LPN/LVN (Licensed Practical Nurse/Licensed Vocational Nurse): The LPN/LVN is a step up from the CNA position. There is no real difference between an LVN and LPN. It’s just that different states have alternative names for them.

RN (Registered Nurse): The RN license is the standard for nurses. A registered nurse license gives you the flexibility to work in many different fields. To become an RN, you typically need a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). There is also an APRN (Advanced Practice Registered Nurse), which requires a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or higher. Check out our posts on RN vs NP and APRN vs NP for more detailed information.
